About Justice April Farris
Justice April Farris serves on the newly created Fifteenth Court of Appeals, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott for a term beginning September 1, 2024. She previously served on the First Court of Appeals, where she was appointed in 2021 and elected in 2022.
Before her judicial service, Justice Farris was a partner at a major firm, handling complex appellate litigation for clients in the energy, technology, and government sectors. Her work earned national recognition; she was named a Law360 Rising Star in appellate litigation, one of only five attorneys in the country to receive the honor in 2020. She was also recognized by Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers for her appellate practice.
Earlier in her career, Justice Farris served as an Assistant Solicitor General for the State of Texas, representing state agencies in high-stakes appeals.
Justice Farris is deeply engaged in the legal community.
Justice Farris serves as a trustee for the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society, and she is on the executive committee for the Garland R. Walker Inn of Court. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas Jury Charge Oversight Committee and the editorial board of The Advocate.
Justice Farris serves the community through teaching and mentorship. She taught Origins of the Federal Constitution at the University of Texas School of Law with Judge Charles Eskridge, and she previously taught First Amendment at South Texas College of Law. She was recently named Abilene Christian University’s Young Alumna of the Year for 2025, and she is a member of the American Law Institute.
She clerked for Judge Jennifer Walker Elrod on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She earned her law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School and graduated summa cum laude from Abilene Christian University.
A proud West Texan, Justice Farris was raised in Big Spring and found her passion for the law as a college intern in the Howard County Attorney’s Office. Inspired by her grandfather’s sense of justice and service, she pursued a career where she could uphold the Constitution and serve her fellow Texans.
Justice Farris and her husband have been married for 18 years, and they have two children.

Experience You Trust. Judgment You Can Count On.

My Judicial Philosophy
Serving on the Fifteenth Court of Appeals is one of the greatest responsibilities of my career. As a Republican, every decision I make is guided by a commitment to the rule of law, the Constitution, and the trust that Texans place in their courts.
I believe that judges should interpret the law as written—not rewrite it. My role is not to impose personal views or policy preferences, but to fairly and consistently apply the law in every case.
Texans deserve a judiciary that is impartial, principled, and grounded in respect for the legal process. I’m proud to serve with that mission in mind—ensuring that every person who appears before the court receives a fair hearing and equal justice under the law.
About the Fifteenth Court of Appeals
What it is. Why it matters. And how it serves Texans statewide.
The Fifteenth Court of Appeals is a newly created statewide appellate court based in Austin. Unlike Texas’s regional courts of appeals, this court was designed to handle cases involving:
- State government agencies
- Constitutional and statutory challenges to state laws
- Cases of exceptional importance involving Texas law
Because of its unique jurisdiction, the Fifteenth Court plays a critical role in shaping how state laws are interpreted and applied.
Justice April Farris brings deep experience in appellate law and state government litigation to this important bench. Her background ensures that the court’s rulings are grounded in the law, not politics—and that Texans can trust in clear, consistent, and fair decisions that uphold the Constitution.

Applying the Law with Clarity and Integrity.
